Tips & Tricks - August 2010

In August it is better to direct your perch fishing near to reeds, cliffs and rocky islets. You could try for perch also by casting from shore, because perch shoals very often stay by the shore, right there between deep and shallow. From your summer cottage pier you can quite easily get a frying pan full of stripe-shirts, as long as your fishing gear is proper!

All it requires for a guaranteed pleasant fishing experience is a sensitive enough gear, equipped just with a thin (0,12 - 0,16) braided line. A suitable choice can be for example a rod like Ensigna Jigger 1.75 Lite and for the reel Ensigna 2000 or 1500. With this set you will easily tire out even bigger pikes – every once in a while they will cross your waters even if you were just perch fishing on that occasion!

Usually the most effective choice for August perch fishing would be a soft lure such as 4,5” or grub or 3,5” flexfish. Also offering smaller lures like Jive of 5 cents can be quite rewarding if you manage to find a perch school that is already feeding in top water. Never the less Jig-wobblers of 8g and 18g have also proven to be very effective, especially when the fish is already rising a bit from the bottom but still too deep to be within reach of an ordinary lure. Both wobblers are suitable for light casting, and our selection of colours covers all occasions. Be sure always to pick a few stimulus colours with you!

Pro tip for August

Sometimes it happens that you can’t reach deep enough with your lure, and perches don’t get too enthusiastic over bottom-sweeping jigs. You could try then with mid-water jigging. Use a light jig head and let your jig go down to the bottom just once or twice and then reel it mostly in mid-waters. This form of jigging is also effective for  active zander.
